Allegro School of Music is a family-friendly music instructional studio in Grand Rapids that has been operating since 1992. We are a division of Family Harmony, which is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to promote an appreciation of and participation in the arts in Grand Rapids.

OUR PRIVATE LESSONS
Piano
Do you want to give your child a great start in music? Are you an adult who learned a little piano growing up but now would like to get back to it? Learning to play the piano is a proven great way to develop musicianship in players both young and old. Our experienced instructors teach students to read music, while emphasizing development of proper technique and expressive, musical playing. Knowledge gained from piano study transfers very well to learning of other instruments.
Guitar/Bass Guitar
Are you a retiree who wants to learn how to play the guitar? Or are you a parent who would like to enroll your child in guitar lessons? Get in touch with Allegro School of Music today and we’ll bring out that inner musician!

Violin

Band Instruments
Allegro School of Music has instructors with experience and expertise teaching a wide variety of band instruments. Brass instruments include trumpet/cornet, French horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, and tuba. Woodwinds include flute, clarinet, and saxophone. We’ll arrange for our Director and an instructor to have an interview with the prospective student and a parent, legal guardian, or other responsible adult (if the prospective student is not an adult). Our Director will give you all the information you need to get started with lessons and our instructor will give the student a free mini-lesson so you can see if there is a match.
Performance Opportunities.
At Allegro School of Music we believe that success in learning a musical instrument goes hand-in-hand with having successful performance experiences. Because of this we offer a variety of opportunities to perform in various settings for different types of audiences. Students who feel good about their performances want to practice more and have further performances, so the cycle feeds on itself!
OUR CLASSES
Many parents find that classes are a more affordable way to test the interest and ability of their children before committing to private lessons, and some students learn better in a group setting for the initial stages. Periodically Allegro School of Music offers introductory classes on piano, violin, or guitar generally for elementary-aged children either at one of our studios or an off-site location, or remotely on Zoom.
This fun introduction to playing the piano balances keyboard time with learning basic music theory, improving overall musicianship and encouraging the learning process. Students must have access to a full sized keyboard or piano at home for practice and are encouraged to bring their keyboards to class. Students will receive a piano book, practice CD and assignment folder. In addition, students who do not bring their own keyboard to class will have access to a keyboard or piano during class.
Learn the basics of playing the guitar in a fun group setting. Hand position, chording, melodies, note reading, tabs and more will be covered. Students will receive a guitar book and assignment folder, but must provide own guitar.
Learn the basics of playing violin, including tending to proper care of the instrument and utilizing effective practice techniques. This class will focus on promoting a fun and encouraging learning environment with peers as students learn to play with a beautiful tone and develop their ears. Students will receive a book and an assignment folder, but must provide their own violin with shoulder rest. Parents of interested students should contact Allegro School of Music for information on obtaining a properly fitting, fully- functional violin that will give the student the best chance for success in the class. The final class will be a presentation to friends and family to show student growth from the beginning of the class to the end.
This fun and interactive class will introduce students to the world of percussion, and give
them the fundamental skills necessary to continue studying in private lessons or school
band. The main focus of the class will be on learning to read rhythms and proper snare
drum technique, and students will also be introduced to drum set, xylophone, and
percussion traditions from around the world. Each student will receive a snare drum
method book, but are expected to bring their own drum sticks and practice pads
(recommendations below). All other instruments will be provided.

Aldersgate Junior Choir
Offered in collaboration with Aldersgate United Methodist Church, this performing ensemble is for children grades K-6. Rehearsals for 2023-24 began in October but register and join any time! The Choir serves as the church’s children’s choir and helps lead worship (Sundays 9:30 AM) approximately once a month throughout the school year. Rehearsals are on Thursdays from 6-6:45 PM at the church (our Main Studio) into May and the full schedule is here: (link to schedule page/see attachment) We use a fantastic curriculum called “Growing in Grace” and our theme for 2023-24 is “The Beatitudes.” Participants get a rounded musical experience that goes well beyond just singing and includes movement and playing instruments such as hand chimes and small percussion instruments. Membership at Aldersgate UMC is not required, in fact many of our participants over the years have attended other churches! We just ask that you be able to commit to our one Sunday where we sing in worship each month. Please register here!
